On ‘Day 28’ third of service decrypted but pace of progress slows

Around 1,000 pharmacies to begin administering Janssen vaccines from Monday

Over 1.4m vaccines against Covid-19 are expected to have been administered by general practitioners by the end of next week.

Health Service Executive (HSE) Chief Executive Paul Reid told the latest press briefing this afternoon, from next Monday, June 14, about 1,000 pharmacies are to begin delivering the Janssen vaccine. This is to complete inoculation of those in the over 50 age group remaining to be vaccinated.

On ‘Day 28’ following the cyber attack, he said the health services were facing very difficult issues and the ‘road to recovery is long and is over many weeks’.

The briefing heard that 33 per cent of the service was now decrypted but Chief Operations Officer, Anne O’Connor, added that the pace of progress had slowed and there were difficult issues faced in opening up the network.

In terms of reduced cancer care in Galway, flooding had additionally impacted on radiation oncology services and they were currently operating at 50 per cent capacity.

In Cork, capacity for radiology continued at 50 per cent and the HSE was availing of private capacity to outsource some of that work.

Rapid access cancer clinics were continuing but were facing difficulties in developing lists particularly for new patients.

Testing on the Healthlink system between the HSE and GPs testing looked positive, the briefing heard, while challenges remained around imaging sites and laboratories.

A high level of activity at emergency departments was of concern but was not translating into a higher level of admissions.

They believed that some of this related to the cyber attack where a range of diagnostic tests were not available to GPs at present and their only recourse was to send people to emergency departments.

Manual validation of patients was proving challenging and absorbed a huge amount of staff time.
