Johnson called UK Health Secretary “totally fucking hopeless” in first months of pandemic

The PM made the comments via WhatsApp, according to a recent Substack post by Downing Street advisor Dominic Cummings

Former chief advisor Dominic Cummings has published a series of WhatsApp messages purportedly showing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson refer to Health Secretary Matt Hancock as ‘totally fucking useless’ on March 27th, 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic was beginning.

Johnson was commenting on a lack of testing being conducted across the UK as the government pushed its widely discredited “herd immunity” strategy, which some experts estimated would have caused hundreds of thousands of extra deaths if followed through in full.

The WhatsApp messages, published on a Substack blog run by the controversial political strategist Cummings, also contain alleged conversations between Johnson and other UK political figures in which the discussed their attempt to respond to the pandemic.

Last month, in a hearing, Cummings described the leadership in the UK’s battle to contain the virus as a ‘completely crackers’ lineup who were completely unfit for the task. The UK is understood to have the fifth highest number of deaths due to the virus in the world, behind only the United States, Brazil, India, Peru, and Mexico.

In those same hearings, Cummings claimed that at one point Johnson wished to be injected with coronavirus live on British television by British physician Chris Whitty, in a bid to ensure the public that Covid-19 posed no danger. In March last year, Johnson caught Covid-19 and was placed on a ventilator, almost dying of his illness, according to some reports.

Johnson also noted in leaked messages from April 2020 that the UK’s efforts to procure PPE were a ‘disaster’, and at one point considered firing Hancock, such was the PMs dissatisfaction with the Health Secretary’s performance.

The messages portray a highly dysfunctional UK government last year during the first wave of the virus.
